I agree with Ryne Sandberg's pick for the NL Cy Young winner, but his logic is flawed:

In making my pick for the National League Cy Young Award, I felt the winner had to come from a playoff team.

This immediately took Dontrelle Willis (22-10, 2.63) out of the picture. Although Willis had an incredible season with the Florida Marlins, I felt that – to be considered the best pitcher in the league – the winner had to be able to win big games down the stretch and lead his team to the postseason.

That makes absolutely no sense. It's a shame that such a great person and ballplayer has this kind of crap in his brain when he's making decisions that actually matter in the world of baseball.

There are some rumors going around that the Cubs may be interested in Jaque Jones to play right field for them next year.

Why?

He strikes out WAY too much and doesn't walk nearly enough. His numbers are worse than Jeromy Burnitz's.

This would be a horrible move. I'd rather have Kevin Mench in here, though that would cost us a starter.

Young players projections

I was just looking at the numbers put up by the two young Cubs that figure to get a serious shot at starting next season: Matt Murton and Ronny Cede?o.

Here are some of my thoughts:
Matt Murton has the most upside of the two because he's more proven. He got a lot of ABs in the bigs and performed. He's hit everywhere he's played and is still hitting at the Arizona Fall League.
Optimistic: .300 AVG, .390 OBP, 20HR, 70RBIs, 20Stls
Pessimist: .275 AVG, .350 OBP, 10HR, 40RBIs, 5 Stls

This is assuming he'll play every day, which I think he will.


With Cede?o it's tougher to tell because he's less proven, he only started hitting last year in the minors and only got 80 ABs in the bigs. But he can run, catch the ball, and hit a bit.

My prediction:
.275 AVG, .350OBP, 10 HR, 25 steals. And while I realize these numbers are similar to what Neifi Perez did last season (and Murton's pessimistic view), he is developing. Meanwhile, Perez is not going to get any better and is being paid 5 million for two years.

They played hard and beat a much bigger team.

Revelation of the night: Sweetney is going to be real good once he gets going.

Neifi Re-signed

I guess I understand the move because Cede?o is supposed to be starting somewhere, although that's yet to be determined.

What it means: Walker has been re-signed, so the Cubs have a starting SS in Cede?o, a starting 2B in Walker, and are reportedly wooing Rafael Furcal. Rumor has it they would trade Walker if Furcal signed on and move Cede?o to 2B, leaving Perez as a backup in case Cede?o falters.

Which makes sense.

So what about Right field? Giles? Too expensive, but that would be the guy I want out there. High OBP, power, a gamer. Murton is in left so they need an established guy out there.

I sense Corey Patterson is about to be sent away somewhere.

I'm not a big NFL fan but I've been watching this story for a while, and here's what I'd like to see happen:

- NFL teams around the league elect to stay away from the disruptive force that is T.O. But because he's so good, of course he'll find a taker. The key here is that, he should be lowballed. He should have to take less money to keep playing somewhere because of all the distractions, baggage, attitude (etc. etc. etc.) he brings along with his talent.

It's obviously a case of a guy getting way too big a head and NFL teams should exploit this - it's the same thing when a great player has a lousy season, he has to take less money to sign.

Unfortunately, I know that performance is king, and TO performs. So we'll most likely be seeing him in another uniform making his big bucks with his big mouth.

God I dislike this guy - he doesn't even care that he won't be playing football the rest of the year.
