Trendy

It's become the trendy thing to do to vehemently disagree with the choice of AL MVP, Alex Rodriguez.
I don't like the guy. With his squeaky clean image and rugged good looks. Plus that contract. I don't.
But he was the MVP. He had the better numbers. Everyone (and Ryne Sandberg again in my doghouse) is saying that Ortiz deserved it and was robbed because of two factors:
- Ortiz is a DH
- Ortiz was the better clutch hitter
The first argument could probably hold water. After all, how valuable are you if you only play half the game? But my contention is that, if the second argument is really that good, then Ortiz
should've won the MVP.
But it isn't.
If you look at the numbers that measure "clutch performances," Ortiz does have an edge. A slight edge. The thing is that people don't look at these numbers. They watch sportscenter, and they see Ortiz's heroics down the stretch. And that reminds them of what he did last year...and so on.
It's a mirage.
Ortiz was awesome. But so was AROD. ARod hit for a better average, had a higher OBP, and stole 20 bags to boot. Ortiz? He may have stolen some of his teammates fried chicken, but that's about it.
ARod wins the MVP because he has the edge in baserunning, steals, defense, AND offense. Ortiz had a slight edge in a couple offensive categories and in one particular category I like to call HYPE.
