''Instead of being in a close game worrying about us trying to come back, they were more excited that they got to boo Hawk,'' Dempster said. ''That was disappointing, and hopefully it doesn't happen again.''
''It was a little classless,'' said Lee, who criticized the home fans earlier this year for booing Baker. ''If you want to boo him when he comes in, fine. But chanting 'Hawkins [bleeps]' for the whole inning is out of line. It's OK to boo someone, but chanting that on and on is overboard.''
Why is it overboard? What do Baker, Lee and Dempster --who've spent all of seven seasons among them in Cubdom -- know about the pain of the fans? How dare these newcomers psychoanalyze and belittle people who've suffered with this franchise just as their parents suffered, their grandparents suffered and their great-grandparents suffered. I've always been amazed Cubs fans don't boo a hell of a lot more. Yankees fans booed Derek Jeter last year. Red Sox fans are killing Manny Ramirez, the reigning World Series MVP, for his latest spell of discontent. When a team hasn't won a Series in 97 years, fans should be booing when they're walking through the turnstiles.
This guy is the worst. What's he talking about here? Does he really think that all the fans that were booing are tortured souls who have waited over 90 years? Come on, most of the fans are drunk morons who have no idea about the history of the team. It's all part of the herd mentality to hate someone whenever they get a chance. Mariotti once again tries to come off as the "voice of the people," and he's terrible at it.
Beltran's slump
Why is he sucking this year? Check out what he said yesterday after getting booed in Houston:
"I want to hit a home run every time up," he said. "Just like I did in the playoffs."
Uhhh...zas is no goot
